In Conclusion
Teachers need students to be engaged in learning, but students also need teachers to help motivate them and encourage them to be the best learner and person they can be. There is a two way street in the teaching and learning process. The responsibility of learning does not only lie on the shoulders of the student, it also rests on the shoulders of the educator. Educators need to be aware of the emotional and academic well-being of the students that enter their classroom. By building long lasting and meaningful relationships with these same students, one can better help motivate and engage them in the process of learning. Expectations of these students should only be limited to the expectations that the educators personally fulfills themselves.
Mutual respect within the classroom between student and teacher should be obvious in the learning environment. One should not demand respect; instead, one should earn it through their actions, words, and attitude. Understanding where the students come from and the baggage that they live with each and every day will help the educator to not only become engaged with their students, but it will also allow them to be engaged in the teaching and learning process. It takes both aspects to have a complete and positive learning environment in which all students feel like they are loved, and are comfortable to be themselves and learn about academics and about life. Students sense when a teacher is not genuine and is only concerned with the paycheck that comes with the occupation. Teaching should be much more than a job. |
